·August 2001: Hoga Island, Indonesia. In conjunction with Operation Wallacea (volunteer work)
Worked in Wakatobi Marine National Park. Main focus of study being on captured turtles in Bajo villages. Included conversing with village elders to discover why and how they came into possession of the animals. Also recording numbers, sex, species and length of each or as many turtles as possible. Studies were carried out with two other individuals. Also involved in whale and dolphin observation. Was required to learn a basic knowledge of both fish and coral species found in the marine park. Data input was also required and all information collected was used by the scientists in their projects.

I worked for one month with the Negril Coral Reef Preservation Society (volunteer). Participated in coastal patrols to keep watch on both tourist and fisherman activities, including inspecting local fisherman’s catches for out of season species.
Completed transects and quadrats taking samples of benthic vegetation. These were collected then weighed and identified back at the base, with results being recorded. All sample collection completed whilst scuba diving.
