to Report on New Global Shrimp OP: The Global Aquaculture Alliance has begun a pioneering online survey of worldwide operating procedures for shrimp farming. Initial results for the new Global Shrimp OP: 2001 survey will be presented at the Sixth Central American Symposium on Aquaculture and Singapore Seafood Exhibition/Seafood Processing Asia. Global Shrimp OP: 2001 is the first international survey of its type to be undertaken in the aquaculture industry. The objectives of the survey is to create a report that will help hatcheries, producers, feed millers, feed additive companies, disease labs and resource authorities better understand the status of the industry, effective production practices and new production trends. The data will yield additional insights on environmental issues and projected changes in global shrimp production. All interested parties are encouraged to take the online Global Shrimp OP: 2001 survey. To participate, visit http://www.gaalliance.org and click the "Take Survey!" link in the bottom right corner of the screen. For those with limited Internet access, text versions of the surveys are also available on the site. Survey users will receive preliminary survey summaries in a free copy of GAA's August Global Aquaculture Advocate magazine. Users will also receive a CD version of the final Global Shrimp OP: 2001 report, which will be available in early 2002. To accomplish this ambitious survey, the process of shrimp farming was divided into 18 component steps from breeding to effluent management. For each step, a pair of experts--one from the Eastern Hemisphere and one from the Western Hemisphere--was recruited to develop a detailed questionnaire about their component of the shrimp-farming process. Initial results of the Global Shrimp OP: 2001 survey will be presented and discussed by the Western Hemisphere experts at the Central American symposium on Aquaculture in Tegucigalpa, Honduras on August 22-24. The Eastern Hemisphere experts will present further results at the Singapore Seafood Exhibition on November 27-29. GAA is now striving to canvas the shrimp-farming industry by working through authors, national producer associations and sponsors. In addition, participants at upcoming shrimp meetings in Honduras, India, Ecuador, China and Singapore can take the survey at online computer stations.
