Aquaculture Study Announcement Summary

EPA is conducting a preliminary study of the aquaculture industry to evaluate the current state of wastewater controls and the opportunity for environmental gain.

Preliminary Study of the Aquaculture Industry

In the preliminary study, EPA will summarize available information on aquaculture wastewater characterization, waste collection, storage, and treatment systems, and management practices. EPA will also include information on industry demographics and trends and will examine available economic data. EPA will also examine environmental impacts that are associated with wastewater from aquaculture operations and existing case studies of the costs and benefits of controls to mitigate these impacts. This information may be used to inform future decisions on the need to regulate wastewater discharges from this industry.

Development of the Preliminary Study - Stakeholder Involvement

Throughout this study, EPA will work closely with business and trade associations, state and local governments, citizen groups and other stakeholders, to develop a complete and balanced profile of the industry. EPA will provide information on its data needs and the status of the study.
