Qualifications:
This position requires a Bachelor of Science degree in biology or related field, a minimum of two years experience at a public aquarium, demonstrated working knowledge of aquarium life support system equipment and aquarium water chemistry, as well as a fundamental understanding of marine habitats and marine organism natural history. The position also requires a working history of the set-up, maintenance and care of specimen holding tanks, a demonstrated ability to detect and diagnose fish disease and knowledge of basic animal nutrition. A valid California driver's license is necessary. SCUBA certification is highly desired.
Description:
The Animal Holding Aquarist is responsible for performing husbandry duties for all animal holding and quarantine facilities. S/he assists the Associate Curator of Animal Holding in carrying out all daily procedures related to the care and maintenance of marine specimens and their holding environments and supports the various teams in caring for their collections within the animal holding facilities. When called upon, this aquarist also performs duties related to the care and maintenance of aquarium exhibits, as well as the care of animals in the field and during transport.This aquarist is responsible for day-to-day care of animals held in quarantine, diet preparation for captive specimens, daily assessment of animal health, assisting with medical treatments, and for assisting with collection efforts. The position requires frequent work using hazardous chemicals.
