Qualifications:

This position requires a degree in biology, strong working knowledge of Matlab and Access for all data analysis and storage, and proficiency in the use of GIS in tag data analysis, as are boating skills and the ability/compatibility to work at sea. The ability to install software, write macros and solve minor computer problem are desirable. Also desirable are AES training and certification, and CPR certification and EMT-level medical skills for remote field work away from 911-level medical responses.

Description:

The Tuna Research and Conservation Center (TRCC) technician provides technical support for the TRCC. The technician must be skilled in Matlab and Access to develop, maintain and analyze databases for the following: bluefin tuna and white shark tagging studies and tuna collection management at the TRCC and Outer Bay Waters Exhibit (OBW). The technician’s Block Lab duties include physiological research assistance, tag data analysis and field assistance in all tagging operations.

The technician is responsible for all collection and mortality records for both exhibit and research tunas and for all data obtained from necropsies on tuna from OBW and TRCC. S/he is also responsible for processing of acoustic, archival and pop-up satellite tag data from wild-tagged fish and captive specimens; monitoring the food rations for all TRCC specimens; collaborating with outside clinical contacts; and supervising two undergraduate research assistants. Extended time away from Monterey is also required.
