Tilapia farm

This farm grows red tilapia for the live fish markets. It is located in a converted piggery, along with the ornamental fish farm.

This is a view of the growout ponds. Click here for a better view. Because of the high temperature and lack of wind, aeration is usually essential.
The broodstock are kept, and the juveniles are raised, in tanks converted from old pig styes. Click here to see a row of tanks.
The broodstock are kept under cover, and the fry are grown to fingerling stage before being stocked into the ponds. Click here to see a tank of broodstock females averaging near 1 kg, or here to see a tank of fingerlings.
The fish are harvested from the ponds and kept in tanks before being taken to market. Click here to see the fish being netted out for market.
The fish are transported in plastic bags with a small amount of water and wet newspaper. They will remain alive many hours in these conditions. Click here to see packed fish waiting to go to market.
